Abstract
Of special interest on the aesthetics of Mishima Yukio’s novel, The Sea of Fertility, this paper focuses on decoding his special language system in the light of the Tao-phenomena Reading (TPR) method. Drawing on conceptual framework of the Western and Eastern thinkers, the TPR is a multiple signifier which let the ‘subjects-flow’, the intersubjectivity of reader and author, co-functions and catches the ‘in-circle’ position and may deal with the endless changes of phenomena. As the research suggesting, Yukio’s reincarnation aesthetics exists in the contradiction and complexity of linear and circular time flow. The usual life of Shigekni Honda, serving as the ‘subjects-flow’, leads readers into author’s world and tells four related-stories of reincarnation separately in the following main characters and titles: Kiyoaki Matsugae, Spring Snow; Isao Iinuma, Running Horses; Princess Ying Chan, The Temple of Dawn and Tōru Yasunaga, The Decay of the Angel.
As a place storing all seeds of phenomenal world, the alaya (i.e., alayavijinana in India), the ultimate consciousness, is the ‘in-circle’ location of Yukio’s sea of fertility. Yukio’s alaya, however, is not for being in the ultimate goodness but serving as an artistic gateway to be in-and-out from the real and surreal world which makes his subject be a ‘divided subjects-flow’. As the love story of Kiyoaki and Satoko and Isao’s devoting to political idea had shown, the subjects-flow searches for the sadness of the secular beauty on the one hand, and steps into a void and confused ultimacy in face of alienated real world, on the other hand, Honda’s hopeless love to the lesbian Princess Ying Chan and the destruction of family love by the evil nature of Honda’s step son, Tōru Honda. Pointing to the separate but endless-circling life phenomena, at the last episode, the conversation of remembering Kiyoaki or not between the elder Honda and the Abbess Satoko at the Gesshūji temple brings Yukio’s reincarnation aesthetics reach the crescendo. Stepping into the alaya may help people experience the ultimacy, but also let us facing endless loneness at the same time. In the novel, The Sea of Fertility, Yukio discovers the peace and harmony of Tao(i.e., Logos, Reality) but refuses to stay at there. At least one of his ‘divided subjects-flow’ insists to live with ‘sickness’ of human being. The TPR method discovers that Yukio enjoys the beauty and sadness, the alienation and madness in the light of artistic creation.
